Abstract:
The rapid growth of online shopping, and the unexpected – and largely unwelcome – rise in retail returns associated with online shopping is having a significant impact on retail profits at all levels. From this, we examine theoretically a common situation: the problems agents face in making accounting data, information and knowledge persuasive in the face of the unforeseen consequences of company policy. Our project involved major retailers in the UK and Europe, and focuses on loss managers, who are often seen as marginal to the accounting in this sector but who in fact, play a pivotal role for change in their organisations.
