Two-way traffic to operate all day

Traffic flow on the Eastern Ring Road is to operate in two directions at all times for a one-month trial period.
To avoid the need for construction traffic to travel through the centre of campus on North-South Road, two-way traffic flow was introduced in June 2010 on Eastern Ring Road, between the Hastings building and the junction with Science Park Road.
In late September 2010, traffic flow reverted to one way - but on weekdays from 4-7pm only. This was to minimize congestion for drivers leaving campus at the end of the working day.
An exercise to monitor initial usage of the new link road - which since December 2010 has provided an additional exit off campus - has indicated that some 300 cars are now leaving campus via this route each weekday evening.
As a result, the congestion that drivers previously experienced at peak times at the Knights Gate Road exit is notably reduced.
So from Monday (31 January) a one-month trial will be implemented, during which traffic flow on the Eastern Ring Road will operate in two directions at all times of the day.
Traffic movement will be monitored and, if the trial is found to be successful, two-way traffic could be introduced on a permanent basis.
