More than 900 people have downloaded the University's 'app' for smartphones, since it was launched on 27 September.
SussexMobile provides instant access to personalised information about a student's course, their timetable and books they have borrowed from the Library, as well as access to a staff directory, up-to-date news feeds and general information about University services.
The most popular feature by far has been the ability to access timetables for courses, events or exams, attracting 5846 'hits' in the period 4-12 October. Looking up course details (504 hits), accessing Library information (413 hits) and checking contact details on the staff directory (157 hits), were the next most-used functions during this period.
Mapping information in the system links to GPS locations of buildings and provides information about the services within them. Ordnance Survey data linked to GPS has been used to create an accurate, scaled campus map specifically for the app.
The app also has a feature to obtain live information about which PCs are free in IT Services (ITS) clusters across campus.
The figures show that 75% of those who have downloaded the app are iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad users. Sandy Radford, Head of University Wide Services in ITS, is keen to point out that it can be used on any smartphone. She said: "There is a web app for people who own a smartphone that is not an iPhone - this can be downloaded for free from www.sussex.ac.uk/mobile."
Reviewers on the iTunes website have given the tool four-and-a-half stars out of five. One review says that Sussex Mobile is "such a useful app". It continues: "Most importantly it has my timetable. I'm also finding the location option useful, whenever I need directions to a bar or café on campus. Great, I'm truly impressed!"
Another user says that it is "easy to use and has the all important timetable."
Although primarily aimed at students, the app can be downloaded and used by staff and visitors.
IT Services are offering £10 free printer credit to the 1000th person to download SussexMobile.
