Law Masterclass: Islam in the European Court of Human Rights.
Tuesday 8 June 12:00 until 13:00
Online
Speaker: Dr Stephanie Berry, Senior Lecturer in International Human Rights Law @Sussex Law School
Part of the series: Sussex Law Masterclasses
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) rarely finds a violation of the right to freedom of religion or belief (article 9 ECHR) when the applicant is Muslim. Rather than protecting human rights in these cases, the ECtHR appears intent on protecting the state from a range of perceived threats posed by Islam to, amongst others, secularism, gender equality and ‘living together’.
Join Dr Stephanie Berry online for a postgraduate-level masterclass that will explore why the ECtHR has been so willing to accept that Islam poses a threat, and what this means for the rights of Muslim applicants.
The free Masterclass will take place on Zoom. It will start at 12:00 BST and end at 13:00 BST. Dr Berry's talk will last approximately 30 minutes; you will then have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
