Dr Jamie Shea
Students taking the new MA in International Security at the University of Sussex will benefit this year from the experiences of a major practitioner in the field.
Dr Jamie Shea is a Sussex alumnus and currently the Director of Policy Planning for NATO. From 1 November he will become the Deputy Assistant Secretary General, Emerging Security Challenges. He will give four lectures and seminars to Sussex students on subjects ranging from international terrorism to the prospects of a nuclear-free world.
Dr Shea, who graduated from Sussex in Modern History and French in 1977, has been involved at senior level in many of the major debates in international security of the past 30 years.
His new role as a visiting lecturer in the school of Global Studies and the Department of International Relations follows his visit to the University last year, when he gave a talk in the 'New Security Challenges' series.
Professor Richard Black, Head of the School of Global Studies, said: "Dr Shea's seminars will cover a range of pressing issues in international security and will give our students a unique opportunity to hone their critical skills when it comes to debating big issues with policy-makers."
Dr Shea was awarded a doctorate at Oxford University and holds academic affiliations at the Collège d'Europe In Bruges, the Brussels School of International Studies at the University of Kent, the American University in Washington DC and Michigan State University. He has also taught previously at Boston University and at the University of Lille.
