Beyond Flight and Rescue: Emigration Planning of German Jews 1933-1938
Tuesday 8 May 19:45 until 21:00
Ralli Hall, Denmark Villas, Hove BN3 3TH
Speaker: Dr David Juenger
Dr David Juenger of the Centre for German-Jewish Studies will deliver a lecture at the Sussex branch of the Jewish Historical Society of England entitled 'Beyond Flight and Rescue: Emigration Planning of German Jews 1933-1938'.
This talk has been rescheduled after it was cancelled on 27th February due to the adverse weather conditions.
Abstract:
The choices and challenges for German Jews regarding the question of emigration in the 1930s will be outlined. Furthermore, they will be analysed against the background of the global migration regime at that time.
It will be the main argument of the talk that in the 1930s, migration questions for German Jews were more complex than many studies on the subject have suggested. It was not only a question of “leaving or going” but a multilayered set of problems which complicated and obstructed the question.
In order to understand the predicaments of the German Jews, the topic of German-Jewish migration is presented within a larger setting of international migration problems of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
The lecture will be followed by questions, discussion and light refreshment. There is no charge for students or members. The charge for most welcome visitors is £5.
