Senior Lecturer in Information Systems Dr Dimitra Petrakaki recently organised a workshop bringing together researchers and practitioners who focus on the role and expectations of patients in health information technology.
The workshop - titled Patient Activism and Digital Technology and funded by the Sussex Doctoral School's Researcher Led Initiative Fund - aimed both to disseminate results from a recent Wellcome Trust study led by Dr Petrakaki (‘The Production & Self-production of Patients through Information Technology: Governmentality in the English NHS', 2014-16) and to facilitate networking.
Participants critically assessed the potential and challenges in patients’ use of various forms of health IT, for example of health applications, web portals, and online communities.
The event also opened dialogue with experts and raised collaborative discussion about the direction of future research and cooperation, with the aim of addressing the different dimensions of patients’ involvement in the design and use of health IT.
