Julie Litchfield attended an event organised by IOM UK to mark International Day of Family Remittances.

The panel included Dilip Ratha, World Bank, Tauhid Pasha, IOM, Mohit Davar, (International Association of Money Transfer Networks), Carlos Vargas-Silva (COMPAS, Oxford) and the event was chaired by Laura Hammond (SOAS).

It was reassuring to see very strong support for family remittances being considered as distinct from other financial flows, including diaspora investment and that improving opportunities available to migrants at their destination was an important part for realising impact of remittances.

There were several themes discussed that chimed with current MOOP research, particularly on intra-household dynamics and the migration industry, and a very pertinent observation that the evidence base on gender, migration and remittances is very thin.
