Margaret Sinclair

Dr Margaret Sinclair works to promote education in fragile or conflict affected settings, with an emphasis on skills for conflict resolution and responsible citizenship in education programmes.

Margaret is a Technical Adviser within the Qatar-based Education Above All Foundation – an initiative that champions the education needs of populations that are affected by poverty and conflict.

After studying first science and then economics at the University of Oxford, she worked as an education planner in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. She then joined the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) where she led education, training and income generation programmes for Afghan refugees in Pakistan.

Margaret headed UNHCR’s Refugee Education Unit in Geneva from 1993 to 1998, and initiated a peace education programme in refugee camps in East Africa.

She later served as Education in Emergencies Consultant with UNESCO and other organisations. She led the drafting of UNESCO’s Thematic Study on Education in Situations of Emergency and Crisis for the World Education Forum in 2000, helping create the Inter-agency Network for Education in Emergencies.

She joined the Office of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al  Missned in 2009. She helped develop the ‘Protect Education in Insecurity and Conflict’ programme within the Education Above All Foundation and leads its education work.
