This week in 1996 – just 16 years ago – Sussex continued its steps into the digital age by purchasing software to edit photos on a computer.

The Photographic and Design Unit celebrated the arrival of the revolutionary software by producing a photo composed of four separate images!

Here is an extract from the original article in the Bulletin published 14 June 1996:

Digital technology is set to revolutionise the University’s Photographic and Design Unit. PDU now has the equipment to digitise, manipulate and re-touch images. Photographs are scanned into a computer and can then be altered on screen using an ordinary keyboard. For the photographic industry as a whole, digital technology represents the biggest change in working practices since the invention of celluloid roll film…
