Dr James Hampshire, Senior Lecturer in Politics

A migration expert at Sussex has been appointed as a Specialist Adviser to a parliamentary inquiry into European Union migration policy.

Dr James Hampshire, Senior Lecturer in Politics, will advise the House of Lords Home Affairs EU Sub-Committee, which will be investigating issues including:

• the overall effectiveness of the plans outlined in the EU’s Communication on a Global Approach to Migration and Mobility;
• the impact of the UK’s decision not to sign up to many of the EU’s legislative migration measures;
• how the external dimension of the EU’s migration policy can function better.

Dr Hampshire’s role is to provide advice to the sub-committee about the inquiry’s agenda, the selection of and questions for witnesses, and the drafting of the final report.

He will attend the committee’s weekly sessions, which start on 13 June and continue until December. His first task is to give a presentation on the background and context of the EU’s Global Approach to Migration and Mobility.

Dr Hampshire says: “It’s a great opportunity to be involved in the work of a highly regarded parliamentary committee that has a track record of conducting influential inquiries into EU home affairs policies, including EU migration policies.

“I'm substantively interested in this policy area and fascinated to get first-hand insights into the process of a parliamentary inquiry.”
