This week in 1975, the then-College of Education at Falmer announced that it was to merge with the Polytechnic in Brighton, ending hopes that the College might merge with the University of Sussex.
The expanded Polytechnic is known today as the University of Brighton.
Education Secretary Reg Prentice has approved the East Sussex plan for a merger of Brighton College of Education with the Polytechnic.
The decision – which ends hopes that the College might merge with the University – was announced in a letter to Mr. Joseph Rendel Jones, Chief Education Officer for East Sussex, from Mr. H. A. Harding, a senior official at the Department of Education and Science.
It follows a visit to Brighton on February 7 by Lord Crowther-Hunt, Minister of State with responsibility for higher education.
The news was welcomed by East Sussex County Council and by the Polytechnic…
