Today in 1976 – URF officially opens

On this day 36 years ago URF, the campus student radio station, celebrated its official launch.
Five years after the project started, it started broadcasting on 14 February 1976.
Here is an extract from the original article in the Bulletin published Tuesday 24 February 1976:
URF
University Radio Falmer, the first independent radio station in the county, celebrated its official opening on February 14.
Five years after the project started, Sussex University Union is now able to offer its own radio service to those on campus.
URF aims to provide a comprehensive service ranging from drama and Esperanto lessons to local student affairs and Indian classical music.
It hopes to liaise closely with local organisations and groups in an attempt to improve relations in the Brighton area between students and the public…
