In December 1978, the Old Refectory Room in Falmer House was renamed Mandela Hall after Nelson and Winnie Mandela. 

Sussex was at the forefront of anti-apartheid protests in the UK and renamed the hall to honour the South African couple.

The December meeting of the Council formally agreed that the Old Refectory in Falmer House should be renamed Mandela Hall, in honour of Winnie and Nelson Mandela of South African anti-apartheid fame.
