STFC PhD Studentship in Neutrino Physics with SNO+ (2016)

The University of Sussex Experimental Particle Physics group plays a critically important role in a number of experiments at the frontiers of our knowledge of particle physics, including the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, and the SNO+ neutrinoless double beta decay experiment at SNOLAB (Canada), the NOvA and DUNE neutrino oscillation experiments at Fermilab (USA) and the Neutron EDM experiment at PSI (Switzerland).

We are presently offering a fully funded studentship available to UK and EU nationals on a SNO+ project for a September 2016 start. The SNO+ experiment offers a rich programme of neutrino physics in addition to the neutrinoless double beta decay search, with first data foreseen in 2017. The successful candidate is expected to participate in the development of an analysis and the subsequent application to early physics data. The student will also contribute to the calibration of the detector, including developing tools to analyse calibration data. The project is likely to involve spending an extended period of time at SNOLAB in Canada.

What you get

£14254 (2016-17) per annum tax-free bursary and waiver of UK/EU fees each year for 3.5 years. Full-time study.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold, or expect to hold, a UK Bachelor degree in Physics at first or upper second class, and/or a UK Master's degree in Physics, or equivalent non-UK qualifications. A good standard of written and spoken English is essential.

Due to funding restrictions, the studentship is open to UK and EU resident students only. However, we also welcome applications from self-funded non-EU students

Sponsors
