Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) (2024)

The scholarship includes full tuition fees, a monthly living stipend, round-trip air tickets and travel allowance. Upon completion of the program, JJ/WBGSP scholars must immediately return to their home countries to apply their new skills to their countries' social and economic development.

Eligibility

  • Who is eligible

    To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

    • have accepted an unconditional offer for one of the 'Eligible Courses' at Sussex (listed below)
    • be a national of one of the eligible countries as set out by the World Bank
    • hold a Bachelors (or equivalent) degree earned at least 3 years prior to application deadline
    • have at least 3 years of paid development-related employment since earning a Bachelors degree (or equivalent university degree) and acquired within the past 6 years from the date of the application deadline (for guidance for applicants from Fragile and Conflict States please see Annex 3 of the Application Guidelines)
    • be employed in development-related work in a paid full-time position at the time of submitting the scholarship application
  • Who isn’t eligible

    You are not eligible for this scholarship if you:

    • hold dual citizenship of a developed country
    • are an Executive Director, his/her alternate, and/or staff of any type of appointment of the World Bank Group or a close relative of the aforementioned by blood or adoption with the term "close relative" defined as: Mother, Father, Sister, Half-sister, Brother, Half-brother, Son, Daughter, Aunt, Uncle, Niece, or Nephew
    • have previously been offered a JJ/WBGSP scholarship but declined it, or have previously received a JJ/WBGSP scholarship but did not graduate

How to apply

Eligible offer holders can submit a request to be nominated by the University of Sussex to the World Bank via the 'Expression of Interest' form, which is linked below.

Please note: this is not an application to the scheme. The University will use the information submitted here to shortlist nominees to apply for the scholarship. Shortlisted appliants will be sent the formal application form in March 2024.

The deadline to apply to Sussex to be nominated for this scholarship has now passed and it is too late to apply for 2024. Nominated applicants have been contacted and they have until 24 May 2024 to apply directly to the World Bank.

Established in 1987 with funding from the Government of Japan, the World Bank Joint Japan Graduate Scholarship Program has helped create an international community of highly trained professionals working in economic and social development through financing of graduate and postgraduate studies.

The World Bank administers the Scholarship Programs through the Learning Leadership and Innovation (LLI). Policy guidance for the Program is provided by a Steering Committee comprised of three Executive Directors and five managers of the Bank. A Secretariat for day-to-day administration is maintained within LLI.

Timetable

Nomination applications are open between 1st February and 18th March 2024. Offer holders can complete the 'Expression of Interest' form on this page. 

Eligible, shortlisted offer holders will be contacted by the Scholarships Office in March and invited to submit a formal application.

Nominated offer holders will be able to apply directly to the World Bank between 25th March and 24th May 2024.

World Bank selected scholars will be notified during June 2024.

Terms and conditions

Eligibility criteria are set by the Joint Japan/World Bank administration, not the University of Sussex. As a limited number of nominations are available, the University may close applications earlier than the published deadline.
