This course offers professional training. You’ll gain the skills and knowledge to carry out a range of discrete evidence-based interventions with children and young people.

You don’t need experience in the field of mental health to take this course.

This course is offered in partnership between the School of Psychology at the University of Sussex and the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

If you’re studying part time over two years, you’ll be charged 50% of the equivalent 2018 full-time fee in each year of study. The fee in your second year – if you continue your studies without a break – will be subject to a 2.5% increase (subject to rounding).

This course gives Psychology graduates an opportunity to move into employment with their local NHS Trust or other healthcare-providing organisations within the NHS, third-sector or private-sector arena.

Developmental Models, Psychopathology and Healthcare Legislation for Children and Young People

By the end of this module you will have gained knowledge in developmental models, psychopathology in children and young people (CYP), and relevent legislation, polices and frameworks associated with working with CYP in mental health care.

You will also be introduced to concepts in the therapeutic relationship and group processes relevant to CYP.

Sessions will include thoeretical teaching, giving you an overview of the topic area.

Fundamentals of Therapeutic Interaction with Children and Young People

  • 15 credits
  • Autumn Teaching, Year 1 credits

By the end of this module you will know about the strategies and techniques to prepare you to undertake basic assessment with children and young people informed by cognitive behavioural therapy.

Sessions will include thoeretical teaching, giving you an overview of the topic area. Your knowledge and skills will then be grounded and consolidated through individual and small group excercises, modelling and rehearsing using case examples in clinical skills-based sessions.

Therapeutic Engagement, Assessment and Intervention with Children and Young People

  • 15 credits
  • Spring Teaching, Year 1 credits

You learn about how to develop a shared understanding of a young person’s difficulties based on cognitive or behavioural models. You'll also learn interventions for health promotion (healthy eating and sleeping for healthy mood), graded exposure, cognitive restructuring and evidence-based group CBT protocols.

Sessions will include theoretical teaching, giving you an overview of the topic area. Your knowledge and skills will be grounded and consolidated through individual and small group exercises, modelling and rehearsing using case examples in clinical skills-based sessions.

CBT Informed Interventions for Children and Young people

  • 15 credits
  • Spring & Summer Teaching, Year 1 credits

By the end of this module you'll have learnt about:

  • problem solving and managing excessive worry
  • reward systems to supplement other interventions
  • behavioural activation for depression. 

There'll be additional skills practice days for interventions learnt throughout the course. The module also includes teaching on setback management at the end of interventions with children and young people.

Sessions will include theoretical teaching, giving you an overview of the topic area. Your knowledge and skills will then be grounded and consolidated through individual and small group exercises, modelling and rehearsing using case examples in clinical skills-based sessions.
