Prospective research students at Sussex have the chance to be one in a hundred: the University is investing up to £6 million to support 100 PhD studentships in 2013-14.

The studentships include up to 50 awards across the arts, humanities and social sciences and up to 40 awards across science and engineering.

The awards also include 10 of the 50 prestigious Chancellors International Research Scholarships, introduced recently to provide a lasting academic legacy from the University’s 50^th anniversary year.

The funding is primarily made up of University-matched research council studentships, collaborative doctoral studentships, school-based awards and University-wide scholarships.

The studentships have been promoted via a targeted email to more than 24,000 potential PhD students who are registered on the FindAPhD website and have been added to the University’s searchable funding database.

The awards will play a key role in the ongoing doctoral recruitment campaign that last year resulted in a 24% increase in PhD applications from UK and EU students.

Paul Roberts, Assistant Head of the Doctoral School, said: “This year’s awards significantly build on the 82 PhD awards offered in 2011-12 and demonstrate both the University’s capacity to attract research council funding and its commitment to attracting exceptional doctoral researchers.

“The breadth and scope of the awards available will enable the University to attract the most talented students from around the globe.”
