Yong’s research focuses on the field of foreign direct investment and international trade, addressing the internationalisation process of firms and their performance in foreign markets. His recent research has focused on four different streams related to international business and strategy:

  • Multinationality, location choice and firm performance, and the analysis of the degree of embeddedness of the affiliate in the MNEs hierarchy and the position of the affiliate within the global value chains.
  • Knowledge flows within the MNEs, and the importance of these knowledge flows for enhancing firms’ knowledge and technological capability.
  • The role of learning by exporting on firm productivity, and why and how exporting firms learn differently from overseas markets.
  • How foreign direct investment activity fosters the interdependence of labour markets around the world, and the issues surrounding the wage determinants.
