The 50-Year Ban on Psychedelics: An Evening with Prof. David Nutt
Wednesday 22 May 18:30 until 20:30
University of Sussex Campus : Jubilee Large Lecture Theatre
Speaker: Professor David Nutt
“The Godfather of Neuropsychopharmacology”, Professor David Nutt, will join us at the University of Sussex to delve into the divisive history of psychedelic policy and why the banning of psychedelics in the early 1970s was perhaps the worst censorship of science in history.
Following the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, the UK has witnessed 50 years of ill-judged approaches to UK drug control. Criminalisation, blanket bans, and blindness to scientific facts have distorted justice, prevented lifesaving research and stopped calls for reform. While the UK’s drug-related death rate is 4.5 times the EU average, over £5 billion is spent annually to enforce failing 50-year-old drug laws. Meanwhile, researchers at institutions such as Imperial College London are uncovering evidence for the revolutionary potential of psychedelics in treating mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD.
In this thought-provoking talk, Professor Nutt will explore the profound benefits of psychedelics in the realms of mental health and the shortcomings of current drug policy.
