A real time intelligent mobile biometric identification system

The research consists of creating embedded applications for mobile phones to exploit the limited computing power of these devices for biometrics and commercial label reading applications. This requires the creation of novel pixel based image processing code in Java, and C/C++. The research will address code re-usability and transportability from one device to another. The research will not only investigate the possibilities for existing hardware but also take a forward look at the evolving mobile phone technology in order to anticipate applications with the enhanced hand held devices. Some of the anticipated applications will require optical zoom systems; we will therefore investigate novel miniature electro optical zoom technology in order to facilitate this requirement. As the mobile phones evolve the volume of image data will increase significantly and we will investigate the application of the MPEG and JPEG 2000 codecs in order to reduce bandwidth requirements. The research will also develop encryption issues for secure data transmission

Sindhi is one of the officially recognized languages of both Pakistan and India. Initially, it was written in Devenagri script and later it adopted Arabic script. Its writing style is from right to left and the composition of words is the result of connecting and changing the shape of its alphabet letters. For example the word Sindhi sindhi text 1is composed of letters sindhi letter 1.

We are currently analysing Sindhi language sounds, how they are produced by vocal tract and sensed by hearing organs. Words are pronounced as individual speech units called phones and phonetics is the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) for transcribing a phone to a text word. There are two main areas of phonetics study:

  1. Articulatory Phonetics: is the study of sound anatomy produced by articulators (i.e. tongue, lips, jaw, palate, teeth, alveolar ridge, glottis etc.) in mouth.
  2. Acoustic Phonetics: is the study of speech analysis pertaining to frequency, amplitude, and time etc.

Hear the Sindhi vowel and word sounds in the page below.
