Picture this: postcards and letters beyond text

A conference at the University of Sussex, March 24-26, 2011.

Picture this: postcards and letters beyond text invites all who are interested in letters and postcards to come together to consider them from a range of critical perspectives, and through creative practice.

The conference will host panel presentations, keynotes, discussion and other forums to investigate: letters and postcards as embodied, inhabited objects, including in museums and archives; postal delivery systems and diaspora; reciprocal relations between verbal and visual arts; and mutating epistolaries in fiction, from the eighteenth century to contemporary novels and through recent theorizations.

Registration includes access to a range of creative practice workshops or to a research skills seminar at Brighton Museum, as well as entry to the private view of the Picture this Exhibition and to our Postcards Competition awards event - an innovative mixed-media competition hosted in collaboration with the publishers Myriad Editions, judged - via correspondence - by the novelist Nicola Barker.

Keynote speakers are Professor Nicholas Royle (University of Sussex), Ann Dumas (Curator of The Real Van Gogh Exhibition, Royal Academy), and Professor Marcus Wood (University of Sussex); we will also host a session presented by Professor Martin McQuillan (Kingston University) and Joanna Callaghan, a lecturer and artist filmmaker (University of Bedfordshire), to consider epistolary film. All aspects, including our Careers Round Table - with Kevin Bacon, (Curator of Photographs at Brighton Museum), Dr John-David Rhodes (Literature, Film and Visual Culture, University of Sussex), Fiona Courage (Special Collections Manager and Mass Observation Curator, University of Sussex), and Vicky Blunden (Fiction Editor at Myriad Editions) are designed to make this conference particularly welcoming for early-career postgraduate researchers.
