Making the Future - Sussex's 50th anniversary fundraising campaign

A new biomedical sciences building

Inspiring a new generation of scientists

Biomedical science building sketchSome of the UK’s leading biomedical researchers began their careers at Sussex and, in recent years, we have started to make major breakthroughs in our understanding of the causes of neuro-degenerative diseases and cancers and how they might be treated.

To build on this important work and explore the new frontiers of biomedicine, we are planning to create a state-of-the-art research environment that will bring all biomedical research at Sussex under one roof.

Molecular biologists working alongside neuroscientists, and cell biologists collaborating with chemists, sharing knowledge and building creative partnerships. A place to train the next generation of researchers and make the key discoveries that will deliver tangible benefits to society through improved diagnoses, new drugs and innovative treatments.

We know that great discoveries are often made at the point where disciplines interconnect – this interdisciplinary collaboration is the driving force behind our plans for the new building.

New facilities, great discoveries

The new building will be a hub for Sussex’s biological and biomedical research community, providing our faculty and equipping them with the facilities they need to continue delivering pioneering work.

The new research building will house:

  • The new Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience Centre
  • An expansion of the world-renowned Genome Damage and Stability Centre
  • An expanded Sussex Centre for Advanced Microscopy
  • The new Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Discovery Centre
  • The new joint Medical School / Life Sciences Screening and Target Discovery Centre

The brightest minds belong with us

A new biomedical sciences building lies at the heart of our vision to make Sussex a truly outstanding university. It will enable us to attract academic leaders in neurodegenerative diseases and translational cancer research to join our new senior researchers in biomedicinal chemistry and drug discovery.

Investing in excellence

The building is just the beginning.

We are not asking for your help to add another well-equipped, thoughtfully designed building to our campus. The new biomedical sciences building embodies a much bigger vision to engage in vital research that will have real impact on people’s lives.
