Making the Future - Sussex's 50th anniversary fundraising campaign

Scholarships and Bursaries

Attracting the most talented and enquiring students from around the world, regardless of their personal circumstances, has always been central to the Sussex ethos. We are committed to providing financial support for talented individuals and, through supporting a scholarship or bursary, you can help us to ensure that financial concerns never act as a barrier to an inclusive and well rounded Sussex education.

Because the brightest students will make a brighter future

It is our ambition to grow our programme of scholarships to ensure that gifted students, whatever their means, can fulfil their potential at Sussex and make their contribution to the wider world.

Over the five years of the campaign, we aim to raise £2 million to fund a wide range of scholarships that will support talented students in a number of areas.

Postgraduate scholarships

Sussex’s reputation as a top international university is based on its intellectual strength, built on world-leading research. Our vibrant and growing postgraduate community is vital to the production of new ideas and Sussex’s development.

By increasing the support available to our postgraduate students and post-doctoral researchers, we can further our work in medicine and the sciences, social sciences and law, the arts and the humanities more generally.

‘Going back into education after a break of over fifteen years was quite a daunting proposition. The Pegge Scholarship has made a huge difference in my thinking—it was clear that the path I’d chosen was the right one. I’m now enjoying my Masters programme and the intellectual challenges it presents without the fear that I’ve made the wrong decision’

Francisco Solares, recipient of The Pegge Scholarship 2012

Undergraduate scholarships

Our undergraduate scholarships will give top students yet another reason to choose Sussex over other universities in an increasingly competitive environment. A scholarship is often the decisive factor for many students to embark on a university education.

The value of these scholarships extends beyond the significance they have to the individual recipients by ensuring that Sussex sustains and strengthens its community of talented undergraduates.

‘The Harper bursary has given me, the first member of my family to attend university, the confidence to truly immerse myself in the demands of higher education, knowing that there are people out there who believe in me. It  has enabled me to afford some of the small things that some of my fellow peers take for granted: small costs such as travels expenses for visits home. With this support I am better equipped to compete and fulfill my academic potential.’

Ghislaino Kamdo, recipient of the Harper Bursary 2011-2013

International scholarships

Every year, bright students from around the world are able to come to Sussex thanks to our International scholarships programme. We would like to provide places to many more deserving applicants, particularly from India, China, the Gulf States, Nigeria and the USA. Additional scholarships will create more opportunities for the best students to join us, enabling them to make the fullest contributions to their own country in the future. These scholarships also help strengthen the international mix that has always been such a vital part of the Sussex experience.

‘More than financial support, what the Santander Scholarship has done for me is help to consolidate my projects and ideals, committed to change the adverse conditions in the country I come from...it is not always easy to believe that one is the key to create a better world, but with back up as strong as this, there is no doubt about it’

Magdalena Alvarez Icaza Jackson , recipient of one of the Santander Scholarships 2012
