Supporting trans, non-binary, and gender fluid people at work: Evidence-based tips and guidance to get you started.

Dr. Anna Kane, Chartered Occupational and Coaching Psychologist, Zest Psychology, and Dr. Lilith A. Whiley, Senior Lecturer in Occupational and Organisational Psychology (Management), co-created a video and infographic as a guide for organisations in support of trans, non-binary, and gender fluid people at work.

This knowledge exchange project successes consider both the process and the outputs of the project. The focus of the partnership was on stakeholder involvement, co-creation, and co-production with the trans community.

Dr. Kane and Dr. Whiley narrate on bringing together the project: “We began by strengthening our relationships with established stakeholders, such as The Clare Project, and also extended our networks by building new relationships; for example with Out Britain. We also put a call to connect with creatives from the community. Through iterative discussions, involving several meetings with different stakeholders, we negotiated aims within budget and agreed on all outputs. We are absolutely delighted to be co-working with the amazing Studio Lutalica from the queer community.”

The project brings out evidence from Dr. Anna Kane, and Dr. Whiley who commissioned research with the NHS. Diversity also played a huge role for the project. Dr. Whiley relates, “I am a cisgender researcher and our non-academic partner, Zest Psychology, is led by a gender fluid practitioner. We worked very closely with our diverse advisory board consisting of trans activists, third sector organisations, and methodological experts to produce the evidence-based report on which our guidance is based.”

The video and infographics primarily target organisations, business managers and anyone with people management responsibilities from a variety of sectors. It will largely benefit Human Resource Management (HRM) professionals, workers and employees from diverse backgrounds, volunteers, and anyone with an interest in creating a fairer and more inclusive world.
