UKVI Compliance

The University is a Tier 4 Sponsor, which means that we can sponsor international students to obtain a Tier 4 visa to study with us.

Tier 4 Sponsor status is granted by the Home Office department of UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), and in order to maintain it we have to ensure that we comply fully with UK Immigration Rules and Tier 4 Sponsorship guidance

The University has key staff responsible for Tier 4 policies and procedures which demonstrate how we comply at all stages of the student journey.

Research and Application stage

At the Research and Application stage (when students choose which university they want to apply to) we provide key guidance on how overseas students can come to Sussex via pre-degree study,  a pre-sessional English course, or via a visiting or exchange programme.  For those wanting to study at degree level or above we provide information and policies on our Study With Us pages which set out our entry requirements for UG students and PG students, including language requirements, and our International student web pages.

Offer stage

At Offer stage (when offers are made and accepted) we have a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) issuing policy, and provide information on how to apply for a Tier 4 visa using the CAS issued by the University.  We also provide information on the responsibilities of Tier 4 students

Registration stage and studying with us

At Registration stage (when students enrol with us) we have processes to ensure students have permission to study such as our Visa and Passport scanning processes.  While studying with us we monitor the progress of taught and research students.  We ensure they are complying with their visa requirements via attendance, engagement and absence monitoring for taught and research students, and by implementing our Visa Renewal and Overstayers policy.  If students are combining their studies with a work placement we ensure they are monitored during this period and provide staff with guidance on relevant processes. We also provide advice about other types of working during studying and employ policies to ensure students are not employed by the University in breach of immigration rules.

We also supply extensive advice and support for our Tier 4 students which can be found on our International Student Support pages.
