Find out about the advice and help available through the Occupational Health service.

What is Occupational Health?

The Occupational Health Service offers advice on health, safety and well-being at work. The service works to:

  • prevent work related ill health
  • reduce risks to health from occupational hazards
  • promote health and safety

What Occupational Health Services are there?

The service covers a wide range of activities including:

  • pre-employment health screening
  • assessment of fitness to work after an illness or injury
  • management referrals; advice to staff and managers regarding sickness, absence or serious illness
  • regular health surveillance checks or medicals depending on the nature of work carried out
  • work related vaccinations
  • health promotion
  • training
  • Health and Wellbeing Online Portal

Who are the Occupational Health Team?

The Occupational Health service is provided by an independent professional organisation called Heales Medical. They are contracted to the University to offer advice and support on work-related health issues. Individual occupational health records or reports are confidential and staff have access to any information kept under the General Data Protection Regulation and the Access to Medical Reports Act 1988.

How do I contact the Occupational Health Team?

Managers who wish to refer an employee to Occupational Health will now need to make the referral via the online system provided by Heales Medical. Please email HRAssociate@sussex.ac.uk to request access to the referral portal the first time you make a referral via the new system.
