Module code: L2905B
Level 6
15 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Workshop
Assessment modes: Portfolio

On this module, you’ll use arts-based methods to explore different ways of knowing and being in the Capitalocene.

You’ll draw on theory, citizen science, archives and artivism to question modern ways of thinking. You’ll focus on empirical data in the social sciences and explore what this leaves out. Using phenomenological approaches such as the weird, eerie and sublime, you’ll challenge how knowledge is produced and used. This will help you rethink the past, present and future.

Topics include:

  • thinking phenomenologically across T-H-H
  • hauntology
  • time out-of-joint
  • capitalist sorcery
  • haunted intimacies (policy, archives)
  • glitch (databases)
  • The Matrix (Film)
  • soundscapes (Audio)
  • landscapes (Photography)
  • map-making (AI)
  • memories of the future.

Module learning outcomes

  • Assimilate and apply material from recent academic research (and where relevant, personal experience), to illustrate the theoretical approaches covered in the module
  • Demonstrate an ability to research independently, exercise critical judgement, and write cogently and persuasively
  • Create a portfolio of learning utilising a range of multi-media methods introduced throughout this module
  • Critically evaluate the strengths, weaknesses and limitations of works that address social science’s fetishization of empiricism.
