Inequality in the 21st century is deeply rooted, pervasive and long-lasting. It takes new forms and cements decade-old divisions within and between communities and countries.
On this module, you’ll explore inequalities across class, gender, race, boundaries and borders in the UK and beyond. You’ll challenge ideas that treat inequality as fixed, ignored or minimised. You’ll highlight the historical, structural and hierarchical forces that continue to shape inequalities today.
You’ll study:
- what is meant by inequality
- causes and consequences of inequality
- lived experiences of inequality
- the relationality of inequalities
- what a more equal world may be and how it could be achieved.
Module learning outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of sociological (and other) perspectives pertaining to inequality.
- Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of empirical research on inequality.
- Make appropriate use of empirical data and theoretical concepts/frameworks from across the module to produce coherent and detailed work on a topic pertaining to the sociology of inequalities.
- Demonstrate an ability to research independently, exercise critical judgement, and write cogently and persuasively
