This module is based on the central question – how do sociologists do sociology?

On this module, you’ll:

  • explore epistemological and methodological issues
  • look at methodological questions through examples
  • reflect on examples of different epistemological approaches
  • compare classic sociological studies with modern examples
  • consider how these approaches are similar and different.

This will open discussions about ways to understand social phenomena with specific ontological and epistemological frames.

  • Identify major methods of data collection in some sociological work
  • Be able to relate research outcomes to the research process
  • Evaluate the appropriateness of different methodologies
  • Understand how different sociological approaches and theories can 'make the familiar strange'
