On this module, you’ll explore carceral technologies and their use in criminal justice system (CJS).

You’ll develop a critical understanding of the theory behind carceral technologies. You’ll also examine how carceral technologies use different ideas for a more humane future for the CRS, including:

  • logics of class
  • racial subjugation
  • entrenching hierarchies
  • new systems of social control.

Module learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of the relevance of a variety of criminological, sociological and technological theories as defined in the module, and their place in contemporary criminological debates
  • Critically evaluate evidence from empirical studies on a variety of ‘Carceral Technologies’
  • Apply theories covered in this module to empirical examples gathered from your own independent research
  • Further develop skills of academic writing and research by producing a 4000 word essay
