In 2018 London hosted 17 of the top 50 FinTech companies in the world, and this is one of the biggest existing clusters of successful FinTech companies with a progressively more growing demand for employees. This module provides our students with a practical introduction to financial technology – what it is and how it is used to develop existing financial services and create new products. Students will work in teams on the assessment of Fintech products. They will also attend guest talks and lectures by experts from the FinTech industry.

Module learning outcomes

  • Develop an understanding of the different aspects of Fintech
  • Demonstrate an understanding of why and how digital cash, cryptocurrencies and other value-transfer tools have emerged from innovations in computer science
  • Discuss how the regulatory environment and ethical principles may affect a particular FinTech innovation
  • Evaluate the trends and opportunities for the FinTech industry and its long-term impact on financial services
