Structural Basis of Protein Mechanism

Module code: C7124L6
Level 6
15 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Lecture
Assessment modes: Coursework, Computer based exam

On this module, you’ll explore the concept that protein structure is central to protein function.

You’ll develop the knowledge and skills to understand:

  • how protein structures are related to each other
  • how these structures relate to protein function
  • the process of structure determination
  • how this process can be used to better understand the functionality of proteins.

You’ll cover essential computational and experimental techniques through teaching sessions. This work provides the basis for the in-depth discussion of more topical issues such as protein complexes and regulation, and protein folding.

Module learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of, and propose the deployment of, key experimental and analytical methods to study protein structure and function.
  • Explain using detailed examples how protein structure is related to its function and mechanism of action.
  • Discuss advanced aspects of protein folding and misfolding
  • Extract data and information from multiple sources to construct and present a poster
