Neurobiology of Brain Disorders

Module code: C7122L6
Level 6
15 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Lecture, Workshop
Assessment modes: Not yet finalised

On this module, you’ll explore the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms that lead to some of the most common brain disorders. You’ll look at the primary targets of each disease within the brain and their pathological hallmarks. You’ll then explore the genetic, cellular and molecular basis of the disease.

You’ll also examine current strategies and outlooks for treating the studied brain disorders. You’ll develop your ability to:

  • synthesise ideas and concisely explain scientific content
  • critically appraise academic literature and methodologies
  • consider ethics.

Module learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the impact of brain disorders, and critique current state of the art understanding of the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms of brain disorders.
  • Describehow molecular targets and therapies are used, developed and generated.
  • Write concisely, with scientific rigour, and to source relevant and reliable scientific articles to back up your written work.
  • Explain appropriate research design that adheres to ethical guidelines.
