Biochemistry and Metabolism
Module code: C7411
Level 4
15 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Lecture, Seminar, Laboratory, Pre lab
Assessment modes: Multiple choice questions, Coursework
This module introduces you to several fundamental principles of biochemistry and metabolism.
You’ll learn about:
- the structure and function of major classes of biomolecules, including proteins, lipids and carbohydrates
- the role of enzymes and enzyme kinetics in biological reactions
- the biochemistry of processes which support life, including cellular metabolism and its control.
You’ll also explore the theory and practical use of commonly used biochemical lab techniques.
Module learning outcomes
- Explain the fundamental concepts of biochemistry and their inter-relationships, considering thermodynamics
- Demonstrate an understanding of metabolic pathways and their control, with respect to homeostasis
- Apply an understanding of enzyme kinetics with reference to inhibitors
- Demonstrate an understanding of fundamental practical biochemistry laboratory skills and analytical methods
