Chemistry

Core Laboratory Skills for Chemists 1

Module code: F1006
Level 5
15 credits in autumn semester
Teaching method: Practical, Lecture, Laboratory
Assessment modes: Coursework

This module will cover the synthesis, isolation and characterisation of inorganic and organometallic compounds. You’ll also learn the theoretical calculations to support experimental evidence.

You’ll perform basic synthetic experiments and use analytical characterisation techniques to strengthen your knowledge.

The experiments will allow you to:

  • develop an understanding of fundamental inorganic concepts
  • gain understanding and experience in essential inorganic characterisation techniques
  • implement theoretical calculations to rationalise experimental data.

You’ll keep an appropriately formatted laboratory notebook to record the details of each experiment.

Module learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate the necessary skills and knowledge for writing manuscripts intended to report and consolidate synthetic, measurement, and computational data.
  • Demonstrate skills to correctly interpret spectroscopic results.
  • Use techniques for synthesising air-sensitive compounds and using specialised computational methods for chemical reactions.
  • Demonstrate the application of fundamental inorganic concepts to laboratory experiments and building as well as developing critical thinking skills.
