On this module, you’ll explore the study of history through critical engagement with recent historical controversies. Focusing on important past events, you’ll gain an understanding of the complexity of the historical record. You’ll also start to understand the challenges associated with its interpretation.
You’ll think critically about the discipline of history and the nature of historical enquiry. You’ll also study how historians have formulated and evidenced their arguments. By doing so, you’ll learn to articulate your own ideas and arguments.

- Demonstrate grasp of key aspects of history as an academic discipline through exploring their role in relevant historiographical controversies.
- Understand the intimate relationship between the study of history and contemporary collective memory by analysing relevant historiographical controversies.
- Understand how historians find multi-layered meanings in primary sources by reading them from different perspectives.
- Develop employable skills by communicating research findings and constructing a coherent argument in a range of forms: in independent study, in seminar discussion, and through written coursework.
