PhD Studentship in Mathematics on Limit theorems for random convex hulls (2022)

PhD project

Convex hulls are employed as tractable yet reasonably accurate approximation for sets of more complicated structure. Selecting the sets at random, for example taking a finite number of points in space according to some probability distribution, produces a random convex hull. The most popular models assume that these points are sampled independently or are the steps of a random walk. The project aims to study geometric properties (e.g. the number of vertices or the surface area) of a typical random convex hull of such type when the number of points is large. The project is suitable for a student with interest in theoretical probability, who will work under the supervision of Dr Vladislav Vysotskiy. The student will join the probability group, which is a very active part of the Mathematics department at the University of Sussex.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold, or expect to hold, at least a UK upper second class degree (or non-UK equivalent qualification) in Mathematics, or a closely-related area, or else a lower second class degree followed by a relevant Master's degree.

This award is open to UK-based and International students.
