Unpacking Children's Mathematical Understanding (X6620)

On this module you’ll explore the theories and approaches to the teaching and learning of mathematics in Primary and Early years settings.
You will unpack the underlying structures which children need to grasp to build their mathematical understanding. You’ll be introduced to different ways of developing this through teaching, learning and assessment.
You’ll also reflect upon children’s attitudes towards mathematics in comparison with other subjects, and question how these are formed and can be changed. You will focus on educational policy, as well as influences from outside of education such as the family and the media.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 47 hours of contact time and about 103 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
