ESRC SeNSS studentships
ESRC 1+3 and +3 Scholarships via SeNSS for research in Social Sciences (2022)
The University of Sussex is delighted to offer a number of ESRC-funded studentships via the South-East Network for Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership.
What you get
Scholarships cover UK level PhD tuition fees (currently £4,500 pa) a stipend (currently £15,609 pa) plus some research and training costs.

Eligibility
Applicants must hold at least a UK upper second class honours degree or equivalent. The scholarships will be awarded for a period of either three years for those with an ESRC recognised research training qualification or equivalent (+3) or four years (1+3) for those without.
Residential Eligibility
SeNSS ESRC studentships are open to UK and Overseas/International students according to the UKRI student eligibility rules. Up to 30% of each cohort of students may be Overseas students. ESRC scholarships cover UK level fees and International level PhD fees.
You count as a UK student if you are :
- a UK national who has been living in the UK or EU for the three years prior to starting your course;
- an EU national with Settled Status in the UK;
- an EU national with Pre-Settled status who has been living in the UK or EU for 3 years prior to starting your course;
- a student with Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK;
- an Irish National (due to a reciprocal agreement with the UK)
All other students (e.g. EU nationals moving to the UK to start their PhD) will count as Overseas students.
If you have already commenced doctoral study, you may still be eligible for an ESRC studentship funding providing that, you will have at least 50% of your funded period of study remaining as of 1st October 2022 when the studentship commences - i.e. you have not completed more than 18 months of a full-time PhD by 1st October 2022.
Scholarships include payment of UK fees, £4,500 and a maintenance grant for 2020-21 of £15,609 per annum.
Part-time students are welcome to apply and in such cases scholarships are paid pro-rata.

The SeNSS ESRC studentship competition is now open for applications.
If you wish to apply for an ESRC studentship you must first apply for a place on a PhD course at the University of Sussex. Once you have secured a place you will need to complete a SeNSS studentship application form.
Please note: Students wishing complete the SeNSS application form must discuss this with their supervisor. You cannot apply for a SeNSS scholarship if your supervisor is not confirmed.
The deadline for applying for a place at the University of Sussex is 4 January 2022.
The deadline for completing a SeNSS application form is 25 January 2022. The SeNSS application will need input from your supervisors.
