Stuart Hall Foundation University of Sussex PGR Studentship (2024)

The University of Sussex is delighted to be working in partnership with the Stuart Hall Foundation (SHF) to offer two funded studentships for the 2024-25 intake to Black, British students to cover fees for up to 4 years per studentship. An additional scholarship will be offered annually in the following 3 years for a single PGR 4 year studentship. Inspired by the life and work of Professor Stuart Hall, SHF has been established to work collaboratively to forge creative partnerships committed to public education and addressing urgent questions of race and inequality in culture and society.

What you get

Fees covered will include:
• A maintenance allowance for 4 years at UKRI levels (currently at £18,662)
• UK PhD fees for 4 years
• Up to £3000 in research and fieldwork costs


We are particularly interested in applicants whose research proposal focuses on areas of interest to
Stuart Hall including Postcolonial and Diasporic Modernities; Cultural Studies; Race, Ethnicity and
Visual Cultures; Radical Thinking on the Left; the production of the other in contemporary societies,
e.g. through institutions such as citizenship, education, law, politics.

PhD applicants eligible to apply will already have completed a relevant Masters, will not have started their PhD, and will be applying to study from October 2024 in any of the following Schools at Sussex:

• School of Media, Arts and Humanities
• School of Global Studies
• University of Sussex Business School
• School of Law, Politics and Sociology
• School of Education and Social Work


The first SHF BAME doctoral scholar joined the School of Education and Social Work in 2021. The
recipient of this 2024 award will benefit from working with the Stuart Hall Foundation to develop
their career and research profile as well as becoming part of a cohort of SHF PGRs who will continue
to join Sussex over the next few years. They will enjoy privileged access to the work of the
Foundation to be able to engage with and contribute to its resources and networks, including the
annual gathering of Stuart Hall Foundation Scholars and Fellows. This is a positive action initiative
under the Equality Act 2010. This studentship is available to start in October 2024


Preference will be given to applicants from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds, as
they would benefit from the Stuart Hall Foundation's Scholars and Fellows Network, which provides
access to resources and opportunities that aim to help members develop their career and research
profile

Eligibility

This award is for:

  • New students beginning their PhD studies in Autumn 2024
  • Candidates who have completed a relevant Masters degree by Autumn 2024
  • Candidates from a Black, British background
  • Candidates who qualify for Home fees
  • Candidates whose proposed research clearly addresses social justice issues and can contribute to addressing barriers and discrimination facing marginalised groups
 

Number of scholarships available

Two funded studentships for the 2024-25 intake to Black, British students to cover fees for up to 4 years per studentship.

An additional scholarship will be offered annually in the following 3 years for a single PGR 4 year studentship.

How to apply

You will need to apply for a PhD based in one of the Sussex Schools of Social sciences or Media, Arts and Humanities. Once you have received an offer of a PhD place, you can apply for the scholarship funding.


Submit an application
Download and complete the Stuart Hall Foundation application form at the bottom of this page under 'forms'. Submit an application, written in a way that can be understood by a non–specialist, to the Doctoral School at doctoralfunding@sussex.ac.uk.

Shortlisted candidates will be notified after the closing date.


Selection process
Successful candidates will have a strong academic background and/or evidence of prior experiential
learning relevant to research and/or the proposed study. All application forms will be reviewed by a
panel of Directors of Doctoral Study in the relevant schools to establish a shortlist.


Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview prior to a final shortlist being provided
to the Stuart Hall Foundation. The Stuart Hall Foundation will then make the final selection of the
successful applicant

 

Scholarship success stories

You are invited to join an online workshop about the studentship tomorrow, Tuesday 9th of January at 3pm.

The online workshop is an opportunity to introduce you to the scheme, answer questions and help support your application. You will meet representatives of the schools involved, get an inside experience from a holder of the award who can speak from their personal experience on the benefits, and some guidance on the final application.

• 9 January 2024 at 3pm GMT online workshop by SHF on how to development applications 

• 1 February 2024: deadline for applications
• Early March 2024: applications reviewed by internal University of Sussex panel.
• Mid March 2024 : internal interviews
• Beginning of April: final shortlist agreed and shared with Stuart Hall Foundation.
• Mid-April 2024: successful candidate notified
