Using SciVal to find ‘stretch’ collaborators
Wednesday 22 May 12:15 until 14:00
University of Sussex Campus : Jubilee G36
If you have interest in learning how to use tools that are freely available to you whilst you’re at the University of Sussex to search for “stretch” collaborators - then this workshop is for you!
Everyone naturally builds a network of colleagues and collaborators as they progress through their research career – tending to spread outwards from the initial, specific research question as you: are introduced to someone by a mutual colleague, talk with people at conferences, reach out to people whose papers/presentations you have read.
However, if you want to actively seek a future collaborator who works in a research area that is tangential to yours, and/or at a different institution, and/or in a different sector and/or another country - things can be more of a challenge. Despite the difficulties, finding such “stretch” collaborators is something that researchers (and research managers) need to learn how to do; funding bodies are issuing more trans-/inter-/multi-disciplinary research calls, and allocating larger pots of money for larger/wider consortia to deliver research projects and/or research training.
This workshop will show you how some of the features of SciVal (such as “Topic & Topic Cluster” investigations) can help find people that might be worth networking/sandpit-ing with.
Lunch will be provided at 1.30pm.
We will look at a case study where we wanted to find potential collaborators:
- researching a broad range of areas including:
- climate change (adaptation / resilience / preparedness / tech uptake / supply chains / place-based vulnerabilities / learn from other countries)
- decision making (under uncertainty / robust / multi-criteria / co-benefits)
- overcoming barriers (behavioural / financial / communication)
- influence (policy / individuals / communities)
- …
- who between them would cover:
- the remit of NERC and at least 1 other UKRI research council
- based:
- within the University of Sussex, as well as in other HEIs (both in the UK and abroad)
- as well as those working in other sectors (corporates; Gvt…)
- especially with those:
- who might be considered “key stakeholders”
- or have a direct connection to such people
- who might form a sensible, fundable consortium so include people:
- that are esteemed within their own specialist research fields
- whose body of work / funding history would be attractive to a funding body panel
- show particular potential in an emerging area…
