In June 2014, the Thai military Junta announced that migrants without papers would be required to leave the country. Over the next week more than 200,000 Cambodians fled or were deported from Thailand and returned to Cambodia. Through interviews with returned migrants and members of migrant sending we assess the impacts of involuntary return of migration on migrants and their families. Specifically, we explore the gender relations with regards to decision making on migration and the impacts that the return to Cambodia has had on these relations and livelihood strategies.

Sochanny Hak is the Knowledge and Action Researcher for WorldFish, Cambodia. Prior to working at WorldFish she was program manager for development and advocacy NGOs. Her research areas include food security, land use change, conflict and resolution, migration and health.

Robert Nurick is executive director of the Migrating out of Poverty Research Consortium, University of Sussex. His areas of expertise include participatory action research, strategic planning and evaluation. His research interests include community adaptation to climate change, migration and rights.
