Building on existing levels of proficiency at B2/+ of the Common European Framework of Reference [CEFR] and Signature Units 322, and 420, the module aims to: – enable students to understand the main ideas within standard and complex sign discourse and to communicate effectively in British Sign Language (BSL) in a variety of contexts; – provide opportunities, within a selected variety of topics and themes, for participation in advanced level communicative language activities (sign comprehension; sign production; sign interaction); – consolidate and develop the range of complex elements of language structures, and specialised vocabulary to support further accuracy and control in use of BSL; – facilitate the exploration and analysis of a special subject linked to the student’s chosen field of interest. This module is at B2+ on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Equivalent Signature Levels 420 and elements of 421 and 422.

Module learning outcomes

  • recognise and identify the main points of extended complex discourse, in standard and increasingly specialised BSL, within a selected range of subjects.
  • communicate effectively in BSL, displaying a degree of spontaneity and awareness of conventions of register, within a selected variety of formal/informal contexts.
  • use and apply specialised vocabulary and complex BSL language structures cohesively, appropriate to context.
  • critically analyse, using BSL, a special subject linked to a chosen field of interest.
