Preface, Prelude, Prologue: an interdisciplinary symposium
Wednesday 5 June 9:30 until 16:30
UK : Depot Cinema, Lewes (Screen 2), next to Lewes railway station at Pinwell Road, Lewes, East Sussex BN7 2JS
Part of the series: Festival of Ideas
Can you think of an opening moment in a narrative work that engages you, sparks your curiosity, and establishes the themes and politics of the whole piece? In Cinematic Overtures: How To Read Opening Scenes, Annette Insdorf tells us “a great movie tends to provide in the first few minutes the keys by which to unlock the rest of the film” (2017: ix). This interdisciplinary symposium will host speakers from across the UK and a variety of disciplines to reflect on an expanded version of Insdorf’s notion through analysis of the openings of songs, novels, films, and video essays.
This event will be followed by a drinks reception for those who wish to stay and chat. Talks will cover a diverse range of creators from Kate Bush, Franz Liszt, and Thomas Pynchon, to Kelly Reichardt, Andrea Arnold, and Powell & Pressburger. For the full programme.
This is a free event, but numbers are limited. Sign up early to avoid disappointment!
Tea, coffee, snacks, and a vegan lunch will be provided to all participants. There will be a drinks reception at 4.30 for those who would like to stay and chat. This event is organised by Lisa Holloway, a Doctoral Researcher and Film Studies Tutor, University of Sussex, and a visiting Lecturer at UCA. She has been an academic manager/tutor for several years, most recently as Senior Lecturer Film Studies at University of Brighton, and Head of Film and Media at the University of Sussex International Study Centre.
