Domestic Light is a global project led by SHL Digital International Artist in Residence Ian Winters, seeking to explore the essence of the home through a global network of multispectral color sensors.
Since its launch in 2023 Domestic light has 34 sensors in 17 different time zones worldwide. With the aim of expanding the network and opening the project to various ways of approaching technology and data the project is seeking artists -collaborators in Africa, the Indian subcontinent and related islands, China, and Central Asia willing to host a sensor in their homes until June 2024.
What is the colour of home?
Domestic Light’s project question yields a complex array of answers. By observing the full spectrum of light, the project opens a window into the nuance of human perception. Domestic Light is a yearlong time-lapse media art project using a global network of multi-spectral color sensors hosted in home windowsills in every time zone worldwide to explore the nature of our relationship to the character of light, home, and the passage of time.
Host a sensor and join a growing network of artists and scholars
Ian’s goal is to capture real-time natural light data from 200 homes around the world, creating a video installation that shows the daily rhythms of life and the influx of sunlight in each of these places. He is especially interested in partners that are interested in exploring and participating in a growing network of artists and scholars exploring the intersections of IOT environmental data networks, artistic practice and civil society.
The project is especially looking for hosts in Africa, the Indian subcontinent and related islands, China, and Central Asia.
