[Man with plaid shirt speaks to the camera]
Hi there. My name is Mark Fisher. I’m Associate Professor in Accounting here in the Business School at the University of Sussex.
I’ve been here 17 years and I bring my practice experience of about 45 years of accounting to my teaching. And what we do here at Sussex is we bring that practice experience to link with the theories and the research work we do here in Sussex as well, which brings a fantastic blend for our students.
Now, one of the extraordinary things about the University of Sussex is its history in AI. Many people think AI is a new thing, but the University of Sussex actually appointed one of the first professors in AI-related studies in 1968.
So the University has a deep heritage in studying and considering in AI. We would bring some of that knowledge and some of that heritage to this module. Now, the purpose of the module is not to teach you how to be an accountant.
The purpose of the module is to equip you with the skill, so that you can work with and hopefully later in your career manage accountants. So we’re going to be focusing mostly on things such as narrative. Why it is that so much of accounting is actually subjective. And where does that subjectivity come from and how does that go wrong?
We’ll also be looking at the issues of AI and in particular some of the misconceptions around AI. There’s a very deep question about the large language models, for example, ChatGPT.
In what sense is that AI? So we’ll be looking at that and how that particular set of technology, both AI and LLMs, is being used by accountants in practice and some of the theory around that.
And we’d love you come and join us here at the University of Sussex for three weeks. It’s a beautiful place. Brighton is a fantastic city just around the corner. And the staff, we really love being with the students. I have this incredible privilege of being paid to help you learn, and I really look forward to be able to do that with you sometime soon.
