Understanding Media Work: Law and Ethics (P5104)

Autumn teaching
This module provides essential legal and ethical grounding for producing content across today’s media landscape. You’ll explore key areas of UK media law, such as:
- defamation
- contempt
- privacy
- copyright.
You’ll do this through real-world case studies, and examine ethical dilemmas related to:
- misinformation
- influencer culture
- AI content
- platform dynamics.
Ethical frameworks for decision-making will support your reflection on responsibility and power as a future media professional. Guest speakers from journalism, broadcasting, and other relevant media industries will share their insights. Assessments focus on employability, helping you build the skills to:
- navigate legal risk
- make informed editorial choices
- produce impactful, responsible content.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
