From Papyrus to Pixel (Q2003)
15 credits, Level 5
Spring teaching
On this module, you’ll learn about the history of written language and the way in which technological advances have influenced (or been influenced by) language form and use. In lectures, you’ll learn about the technologies and the social and cultural context in which they emerged. In seminars, you’ll discuss the issues and explore language samples from different time periods.
You’ll focus on historical and present-day issues. You’ll:
- demonstrate a sound understanding of the technological, social and cultural contexts and how they impacted language
- explore questions around current language practices
- focus on online language use, specifically Large Language Models.
This will reflect the real time development of the technologies.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
