Representing Realities (Q2000)
30 credits, Level 5
Autumn teaching
Language matters. The way that we talk about things both reflects and shapes the ways we think about them.
On this module, you’ll learn how to systematically identify and describe the ways that groups of people, phenomena or ideas are framed. You’ll:
- consider the impact of representation on topics, including social justice and public understanding
- learn about critical discourse analysis and semantics
- understand and identify the ways in which we’re persuaded by writers and speakers.
Through workshops, you’ll apply digital data analysis tools from corpus linguistics. You’ll develop as a researcher and communicator throughout, building essential skills for your final year dissertation project.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
